Alene Nitzky paints abstract landscapes in acrylic and mixed media. Living in Fort Collins, Colorado, she draws her inspiration from her experiences on nearby mountain trails, as well as distant places she’s traveled on foot as a longtime hiker and trail runner. Her favorite subjects are abstract desert, mountain, and seascapes. She feels especially drawn to Mexico, where she has traveled for outdoor adventures and cultural experiences. She is mainly a self-taught artist. She started painting in pastels, paused for a 20-year career as an oncology nurse, then returned to painting primarily in acrylic. In her abstract art, she seeks to share the energy and beauty of the unique experiences that can only be found by exploring remote places on foot.
Artist Statement
"I’ve always needed nature for refuge and spiritual sustenance, and my artistic inspiration comes from moving long distances through the landscape on foot. As a trail runner and hiker, spending long days outdoors while moving forward, I experience the views, weather, and subtle changes in light throughout the day. The beauty in nature can be presented in abstract form to bring the feelings, light, movement, and energy of traveling through those distant settings. Many of my works involve a vanishing point to represent approaching the horizon and the motion occurring in the environment as I experience it while moving through it. I want to capture the sun crossing the sky throughout the day, casting shadows in different directions, figures in the sky in cloud forms, or the effect of wind and weather on the elements of the natural world. I make my art because I want to share the feelings and magic of what I see in those remote places where most people never venture. It’s like sharing a closely guarded secret."
